Introduction
Nexium® and its generic, esomeprazole, have been studied extensively in Europe and are used to treat GERD (, ). Esomeprazole has been used to control reflux symptoms and has been shown to be superior to placebo in patients with heartburn who have a history of GERD (, ). In addition, the use of the drug in patients with GERD has also been studied and some studies have shown significant improvement in symptoms associated with GERD (, ). Esomeprazole has a long half-life, which means that it can be taken at any time, although this may vary from patient to patient. Patients on esomeprazole should take the drug for at least 14 days to see the full effects of the treatment, with most patients taking one to two tablets per day, which is generally considered safe (, ).
The authors are concerned about the potential for drug-related side effects, including gastrointestinal discomfort and an increased risk of hyperkalemia, which should be considered in patients with a history of GERD who have been taking drugs for more than six months. The drug may also increase the risk of heart disease, which has been linked to the use of the drug for several years (, ).
